Semi Function Series - Cobogó Mirror

Semi-Function 1, Cobogó Mirror is the first in a series of objects that celebrate a specific style of brick (cobogó) that I became infatuated with while in São Paulo. This brick was originally designed to allow light and ventilation, and is well known for its shape and orange color. Because of its porosity, I see the cobogó as an object that prompts us to consider the boundaries between interior and exterior. I made my own cobogó, but changed the material properties by recasting the traditional clay brick in foam. These new foam bricks surprise participants. Through this bit of trickery, an otherwise familiar item of urban life—the cobogó —can now wiggle and squish rather than ventilate and scaffold.
